The first 'Green key' labels for accommodation in the Brussels Region are awarded

To respond to the interest expressed by the hotel industry, as well as by other kinds of tourist establishments in the Brussels-Capital Region, Christos Doulkeridis, Brussels’ Minister for Tourism, was keen to introduce a clear, recognisable label. “Ever since I took on this role, I wanted to support a label or a certification system to reduce our ecological impact and secure Brussels’ position as a sustainable destination in 2014″, explained Christos Doulkeridis. At the end of a period of reflection and analysis, the international “Green Key” label was chosen, represented in Wallonia and in Brussels by the Fédération Inter-Environnement Wallonie (IEW).

Port of Tampa reports single-day record for cruise passengers

The Port of Tampa set a single-day record for passenger throughput on Sunday, November 20, when an estimated 12,623 passengers embarked and disembarked on three cruise ships, making it the single busiest day on record at the nation’s eighth-largest cruise port.

Well into a successful winter cruise season, the Port welcomed three ships, ms Carnival Legend, ms Norwegian Star and Holland America Line’s ms Ryndam, on a day marked by smooth operations at the port’s three cruise terminals. Tampa’s robust cruise activity bodes well for what the port authority projects to be a record year for number of passengers—around 940,000.

President Ilham Aliyev who joined UNWTO/WTTC campaign said Tourism is a priority for Azerbaijan

Stressing that 2011 had been declared the Year of Tourism in Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliev said the tourism sector was a priority for the country and an area in which investments in infrastructure would be intensified.

The President was speaking after receiving an Open Letter from UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, on the importance of Travel & Tourism as a force for economic growth and development.

“As traditional economic sectors face great challenges, new sectors such as tourism, sports and culture are driving growth in these difficult times,” said Mr. Rifai. “Azerbaijan is well prepared for this new reality and has clearly prioritized tourism, as evident in declaring 2011 as the Year of Tourism and joining the Global Leaders for Tourism Campaign.”
